Huh. What are the odds Harding met Shathann on her visit to the Lighthouse?

This would be a great angsty fic, but I also want to analyze Shathann more as a character before I write it. I don't think she is necessarily a bad mother. I thought so at first but really had to take a step back.

I think the plot device for both her and Taash is just one of generational trauma.

You cannot expect Shathann to hold space for Taash, when she herself does not understand there are other ways to be. She clings to culture and did her best to force Taash to do the same. It's easier to force someone to mold to your idea of normal, than for it to be challenged. I can image especially as a parent.

I think in both cases (Rook romance or Harding romance), Harding would have let Taash and Rook have that dinner conversation with Shathann on their own.

Because not only is it a lot for Taash to carry regarding their mother and Rook, carrying that for their budding romance is a lot too. And then to come out on top of that? Oof.

This isn't because Harding isn't emotionally mature enough or wouldn't understand, but she would know when to let someone fight their own battle.

Do I think the other companions tried to catch a glimpse of her? Doy. Say hello? Absolutely. I think most of them would respect Taash enough to keep their distance until Taash themselves extended the offer to join the three of them for dinner. This all includes Harding.

Harding has a difficult time understanding that other people don't have great parents. I also assume she would know how stressful Taash's and Shathann's relationship is. Does she get mad? Is she overly polite as to not make things harder on Taash? I don't quite know.

So like, even though I think Harding would be open to meeting her, Taash probably not so much off the bat.

I think one of the most important lessons one can learn when being in a romantic partnership is knowing you can't fix all your sweetie's problems. That the other still has to take on the world alone at times and that it's going to be hard. I think both Harding and Taash would understand this.

Harding would provide emotional support before and after the dinner. Harding does this by offering different perspectives about Shathann's actions from when Taash was a child.

Keep in mind, it's never referenced that Taash visits Mama Harding, but only that they got a letter. I can imagine that the 'parent visit' is something they both agreed would come after -insert game events here-.

(This is actually inspiring another writeup I wanna do about the dinner scene itself, but that's probably gonna take me a good long while.)

I have seen fathers cradle their dead children, seen them kiss their faces and hold their little hands. I have seen them faint with grief when asked to identify the dead. I have seen them carry their sons and daughters. I have seen them fasting to provide what little they can for their families.

I have seen men and boys digging through the rubble with just their bare hands, I have seen them comforting strangers, playing with children, rocking them, hushing them, even if the face of such imminent danger. I have seen them cry, seen them grieve, seen them break down into each other's arms, seen them be selfless, beyond selfless, becoming something I don't have a word for.

I have seen the men who are doctors refuse to leave their patients, even when they have no medicine or supplies to give them, even when they're threatened with bombings. I have seen fathers who have lost all their children pick orphans up into their arms and proclaim them their child so they are not alone. I have seen men and boys digging pets out of the rubble.

the men are innocent too. the men and boys are being hurt and killed too. the men and boys are grieving too. the men and boys are scared too. the men and boys are fighting to save their people too. the men and boys deserve to be fought for too.
